Escort in Independence for fallen Trooper Sgt. Jim Smith

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (KWWL) – The Iowa State Patrol and first responders across the Hawkeye state are planning to pay respects to fallen Iowa State Patrol Sergeant Jim Smith Sunday as his body is escorted from the state Medical Examiner’s office in Ankeny to his hometown of Independence.

Smith was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a barricaded suspect in Grundy Center on Friday night.

The Iowa Medical Examiner is planning to release Sgt. Smith’s body around 1 p.m. Sunday.

Upon release, the Iowa State Patrol will escort Sergeant Smith’s body to I-35, northbound to Highway 20.

The escort will continue eastbound on Highway 20 to Highway 150 at Independence.

Finally, the escort will head northbound on Highway 150 to Reiff’s Funeral Home at 216 3rd Ave. S.E.

Independence Police Department plans to escort Sgt. Smith’s body through the City of Independence.

Above is the route of Sgt. Smith’s procession Sunday.

Members of the public are encouraged to line the route to honor Sgt. Smith.
